Ethiopian horses are formerly known as Abyssinia. Approximately there are 2.8 million horses in Ethiopia, That is more than half the total horse population in the African continent. Ethiopia characterised its horse into eight distinct breeds in the year 2012, They are…
1. Abyssinian Horse
The Abyssinian type or breed is found mostly in the northern part of Ethiopia, particularly in the Semien Mountains in the area of Gondar, in the Amhara Region.
This breed is adjusted to the life and work in the mountains, from where these horses spread further down to the plains and today all around the coastline of the Red Sea.
2. Bale Horse
The Bale horse breed has poor conformation with a heavy belly and sways back. This breed is found in highland areas of the Bale Zone of the Oromia Region, in the southern part of Ethiopia.
3. Borana Horse
The Borana is a lowland breed kept by the pastoral Borana Oromo people, particularly in the area of the city of Megga in southern Ethiopia. It is of good conformation, is always bay, and is not used for draught work.
4. Horro Horse
The Horro or Horo breed is a poorly conformed agricultural horse from the Horo area of western Oromia Region, in the west of Ethiopia.
5. Kafa Horse
The Kafa is a well conformed and robust breed when compared to the most of Ethiopian breed, This breed is from the rain-forests of Sheka and Keffa zones of Ethiopia.
6. Kundudo Horse
The Kundudo horse breading track is from the Kundudo mountain in the Oromia region of Ethiopia and they are the oldest known feral horse population in Africa.
Italian ecologic mission began to research & preserve the breed from the year 2008, This Kundudo breed hose is only remaining wild horse in east Africa.
7. Ogaden Horse
The Ogaden is also called Somali or Wilwal, the breeding track is from the Somali region of Ethiopia.
8. Selale horse
Selale horses also called as Oromo, this horse breed used as Workhorses, Pleasure horse & Show horse. The breeding track is from the Shewa area of central Ethiopia.
