The Latvian White (Latvian: ‘Latvijas baltā’) is a breed of pig from Latvia. They have prick ears.
Daina Kairisha, a professor of the Latvian University of Agriculture, says there is a threat for the most dangerous domestic livestock breed, which is named after Latvia.
Latvian white – it is clear from the name that the animal is white, without any spots or drawings, as can be seen in other varieties. The breed is based on the Yorkshire variety of pigs. The year of registration of the Latvian white pig breeder is lower than for other local breeds of livestock in Latvia, it is only 1967, that is, the time of the Soviet Union.
Of course, at that time, the pigs of Latvia’s white pigs and, also, the Landrace pigs, tumbled.
The Latvian white pig is much shorter and deeper, drunker in the body, and has a different shape. The number of animals of this breed dropped sharply, as the white pig has a much higher thickness of the backs and a smaller amount of lean meat in the carcass, as a result of which the animals are not interested in processing because they will not be profitable. It is absolutely clear why the population of these animals has rapidly plummeted and those owners who are still growing this Latvian pig are only enthusiasts, “says the professor.
«”I cannot even say how white pigs are still in Latvia, because the last two farms that still raised white pigs in Latvia were located in affected areas of the African swine fever, so the reproduction and sale of piglets are severely limited,” says Kairisha. ”Data already available in 2014 show that only 59 of these varieties of sows were registered on both of these farms. Since I cannot tell today what the situation is with a white pig at all – whether there is and how much. This breed is in the most vulnerable condition of all varieties of genetic resources in Latvia.”.
